About Banyumulek
Banyumulek is a traditional pottery village located in West Lombok, where the art of pottery making has been preserved for generations. This village is famous for its unique black clay pottery crafted using traditional Sasak techniques passed down through families.
Unlike other pottery villages that use wheels, Banyumulek artisans shape their clay entirely by hand, using simple tools and natural materials. The distinctive black color comes from a special firing process using rice husks and coconut shells.
Visitors can watch demonstrations of the entire pottery-making process, from preparing the clay to the final firing, and even try their hand at creating their own pottery pieces under the guidance of local artisans.
Pottery Making Process
- 1 Clay preparation - Local clay is cleaned and kneaded to the right consistency
- 2 Shaping - Artisans form the clay by hand without using a wheel
- 3 Drying - Pieces are dried naturally in the sun
- 4 Firing - Traditional firing with rice husks and coconut shells creates the distinctive black color
- 5 Finishing - Some pieces are polished or decorated with traditional motifs
