Pura Lingsar

A unique temple where Hindus and Muslims worship together in harmony

About Pura Lingsar

Pura Lingsar is a unique temple complex in West Lombok that represents the harmony between Hinduism and Islam on the island. Built in 1714 by King Anak Agung Ketut Karangasem, it's the only temple in the world where Hindus and Muslims worship together in the same compound.

The temple consists of two main sections: the Hindu Pura Gaduh on the upper level and the Muslim Kemaliq on the lower level, which surrounds a sacred spring. The spring is home to holy eels that visitors can feed with hard-boiled eggs, considered a sacred ritual.

Pura Lingsar is not just a religious site but also a symbol of Lombok's cultural diversity and tolerance. The annual Perang Topat (Rice Cake War) festival held here is a spectacular event where Hindus and Muslims throw colored rice cakes at each other in a symbolic ritual to ensure fertility and prosperity.

Temple Features

  • 1 Pura Gaduh - The Hindu temple section with traditional Balinese architecture
  • 2 Kemaliq - The Muslim worship area surrounding the sacred springs
  • 3 Sacred Springs - Holy water sources where devotees collect water for blessings
